Lavandula hybrida var. abrialis refers to a specific cultivar (a cultivated variety) of Lavandin.
Characteristics of Lavandin Abrialis essential oil:
Aroma: It has a strong, piercing, camphor-like smell with underlying floral notes. While still distinctly lavender-like, it's generally considered less sweet and more herbaceous/medicinal than true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). It has a higher camphor and 1,8-cineole content than true lavender.
Chemical Profile: It's rich in linalool, linalyl acetate, camphor, and 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol). Abrialis typically has one of the higher 1,8-cineole contents among the lavandin cultivars.
Yield: Like other lavandins, Abrialis is a high-yielding plant, producing a significant amount of essential oil, which makes it more economically viable for commercial production than true lavender.
Uses:
It's widely used in soaps, detergents, perfumes, and other industrial fragrances due to its strong and long-lasting aroma.
In aromatherapy, it shares many properties with other lavandins and true lavender, including antiseptic, antibacterial, analgesic (pain-relieving), and anti-inflammatory qualities.
It's often used for muscle aches, respiratory support (coughs, colds, flu), and can be calming and aid sleep, though its stimulating camphoraceous notes make it less universally preferred for relaxation than L. angustifolia.
Safety: Similar to other lavandins, its higher camphor content means it should be used with caution, especially on sensitive skin, around young children, or by individuals with epilepsy. Proper dilution is always necessary for topical application.
